Discover how to make your materials more realistic with surface decals in Lumion.

In the real life and digital world, the smallest details do matter. The more details, the more your clients will feel like they are visiting the real thing. Surface decals is a new feature in Lumion 12. It will help you to achieve that result by adding wall art, murals, patterns, scratches, markings, signage, or even damage and imperfections.

In this post, Chip Render will show you how to make realistic materials with surface decals in Lumion.

1. Lumion surface decals

Surface decals is a brand-new feature coming up with Lumion 12. However, it is only available in Lumion Pro. There are 142 surface decals in the Lumion Pro content library. Below are collections of decals:

  • Asphalt damage
  • Chalk drawings
  • Maintenance hole covers
  • Dirt
  • Drain damage
  • Exposed brick
  • Leaves
  • Mold
  • Moss
  • Paint
  • Plaster
  • Potholes
  • Road markings
  • Rust
  • Wall damage
  • Wall stickers

Do you know what’s more? You are able to make your own decals and place them on any surface in your project.

2. Add surface decals in Lumion

Go to “Effects” in “Place” mode. Decals is the last subcategory. Click it, you will see several types of surface decals. They are grouped in collections. You can also check the collections in the previous session.

Choose one decal you like and project it on any surface. The surface can be a wall, road, furniture, etc. You can make changes to the decal like any object in Lumion, including size, color, transparency, range, orientation, and more.

By that, you easily add a more natural look to your design.

3. Import custom surface decals into Lumion

Even though 142 ready-to-use surface decals in the Lumion content library are quite many and can be used for several purposes, there are times you could not find a suitable one. Because you want a special and customized decal. In this case, from Lumion 12.3, you easily import an image and let Lumion turn that image into a custom decal for you. After that, the custom decal will be applied and modified like other objects.

Go to Effects > Decals. Select Custom decal (Lumion logo) and place it on a surface. Next is to replace that Lumion logo with the image you want to show on the surface. Once placed, open the decal’s property settings and click on ‘Show more.’

Discover 4 ways to reduce render time in Lumion – a powerful rendering software for architecture.

When your project is too complex or your hardware is not powerful enough, your render speed will decrease. As a result, the screen might go white and your PC may become sluggish when rendering. So how can we improve the render speed? In this post, Chip Render will show you 4 ways to reduce render time in Lumion.

4 ways to reduce render time in Lumion stahl house

Stahl House at night, rendered in Lumion 12.

1. Optimize your project

You can try to reduce the number of each of the following elements in your project to shorten the render time of a Photo or a Clip:

  • Different models that are added to the Project.
  • 3D Points in the top right corner of Build Mode.
  • Textures/materials (also their resolution).
  • Movie/Photo Effects you are using, especially, the Sky Light and Hyperlight effects.
  • Reflection Planes that you have added and are using in the Reflection Effect.
  • Sky Light in Planar Reflections in the Sky Light Effect is turned on.
  • Spotlights that are set to Shadows: Dynamic in the Project.
  • Spotlights you have chosen in the Global Illumination Effect.
  • Large surfaces that are assigned as 3D Grass Materials or Foliage.
  • Video Textures assigned to materials.

2. Change Output Settings

You also are able to reduce the time it takes to render by lowering the Output quality, the Frames per second, and the Output resolution.

  • Output quality: 1 – 5 star.
  • Frames per second: 25, 30, 60, 200.
  • Output resolution: 640 x 360, 1280 x 720, 1920 x 1080, 2560 x 1440, 3840 x 2160.

4 ways to reduce render time in Lumion change output settings

For instance, rendering a movie at 1280 x 720 pixels in 3-star quality and 25 frames per second is a lot faster than rendering a movie at 3840 x 2160 pixels in 5-star quality and 60 frames per second.

3. Upgrade your hardware

Two tips above will help to make the most of Lumion with your current hardware. But they also might reduce the quality of your work. Why do we let the hardware limit our creativity and our work quality? It is better to upgrade your computer to remove that limit. Especially if you have demanding, detailed, and very complicated projects. You may have to change the System Memory (RAM), the GPU, or perhaps the whole PC.

If you do not know where to start, we have some recommendations for you:

4. Use Chip Render Farm for rendering your Lumion projects

Having a powerful PC ensures a smooth experience while you are working with Lumion. But for the render process, Cloud Rendering service is a better solution if you are in one of these cases:

  • Your projects are too complex, and take days to complete.
  • You have a tight deadline, the due date is coming near.
  • You want to keep your computer free to continue the creative task.
  • Your budget is not enough to build or buy a new strong PC, etc.

Discover how Lumion license works and how it works on Chip Render.

Lumion is 3D rendering software made especially for architects. If you have a 3D model of your design, Lumion can help you bring it to life. In order to take advantage of the application, you need to buy a Lumion license.

In this post, Chip Render will show you how Lumion license works and how to use Lumion license on Chip Render.

How does Lumion license system work?

When you purchase a Lumion license, you will receive a license key in your email. This is a floating license, it works the same as network licenses. You can use the license indefinitely and you can install a single Lumion license key on multiple computers of yours. However, if two or more people want to use one single Lumion license key on many computers at the same time, you need to add more seats to your license.

Lumion needs internet access to open and shut down Lumion, as well as to use the following functionality: MyLumion uploads, OpenStreetMap downloads, and uploading videos to YouTube in Movie Mode.

About Chip Render

Chip Render is a powerful and affordable GPU rendering solution for 3D artists, designers, and architects. It provides Cloud Workstations with cutting-edge hardware to handle any kind of project. Especially, it support real-time rendering software such as Lumion, Enscape, Twinmotion, D5, Unreal Engine, and more. Unlike usual render farms, Chip Render provides cloud rendering under the IaaS model. You rent our powerful remote workstations and use them just like your own computer.

How to use Lumion license on Chip Render?

Therefore, you will need to install Lumion (one time) and use your own license on Chip Render. How to do that? Let’s find out.

  • If you have extra licenses or seats, everything is easy. After installing Lumion on the remote workstation, add your key to open and start using Lumion.
  • If you only have one license, you need to transfer that license to the remote workstation to use. On your local computer, click on the Quit button on Lumion software, Lumion will release the License Key. Because the Quit button connects to the Lumion server. You might need to wait a few minutes for the system to release your key. Then, the software will automatically close. This process requires the internet, so make sure you are always connected.

The next step is to install Lumion on the Chip Render Cloud Workstation. There are two options:

1. Download Lumion from your Lumion account. The downloaded version from your account already has a key license embedded, so you can open it without adding anything.

lumion license how it works 2

2. If your Lumion version is 9.0.2, 10.3.2, 10.0 pro, or 11.0.1, then Lumion will ask for your key when you open it. Please find your “Getting started with Lumion” email to take the key code.

Note: before you leave our server, make sure you have deactivated your license of Lumion.

Lumion license - FAQ

1. Is Lumion license floating or node-locked?

All Lumion License Keys are floating network licenses that are managed by a cloud-based license server.

2. How do you release a Lumion License Key?

Once you click on the Quit button, Lumion will automatically release the License Key. Note: The computer must have internet access.

3. Error message ‘No license seats are currently available’

“No license seats are currently available” means all the Seats of the embedded License Key in your Lumion installation are currently in use on another computer(s). To solve this issue, you close Lumion on the computer(s) that Lumion is running on.

4. Error message ‘Your License Key has expired’

‘Your License Key has expired’ means that your license/version has already expired. A Student License Key is valid for 365 days after your application has been approved, while a Lumion Trial is valid for 14 days since you first start Lumion.

You need to uninstall that Lumion version and buy a new license.

5. How can you use Lumion on more than one PC at the same time?

To use Lumion on more than one PC at the same time, there are two ways:

  • Buy a License Key with multiple Seats.
  • Buy a separate License Key for each PC.

Chip Blog logoDeactivating and activating the license key of Lumion is kinda easy. You can make use of how Lumion license works and leverage Chip Render Farm to cut down your render times. With powerful and affordable 1/2/4 x GPU RTX 3090 servers, Chip Render will do the heavy render while you can free up your local computer and focus on being creative.

Discover 12 things you should know or most FAQs about Lumion.

Architects are too familiar with Lumion, a real-time architectural rendering software. Developed by Act-3D, since 2010, Lumion has grown to include hundreds of thousands of users all over the world and become one of the most powerful rendering software for architectural visualization.

This is because Lumion makes it easy to convey how your projects will translate into real-life experiences and emotions. With a large content library, features, and intuitive tools, it also gives you the full creative freedom to bring your exteriors, interiors, and landscapes to life.

For beginners, you may have lots of questions about this software. In this post, Chip Render will answer 12 things you should know about Lumion or the most frequently asked questions about this amazing application. This post is dedicated to Lumion 12 and older versions.

1. What can be Lumion used for?

Lumion is architectural rendering software that helps architects and designers breathe life and beauty into their CAD and 3D models. From single residential to large-scale urban plans; exteriors, interiors, landscapes, and more. You can create any building, landscape, and region with Lumion.

2. Is Lumion easy to learn?

For those who have not played computer games, learning to navigate with the user interface of Lumion will take just a few minutes of practice. In one afternoon, you can learn by yourself to make visualizations of your designs.

3. What do you need to run Lumion?

You can check the detailed Lumion System Requirements (including minimum, recommended, and high-end specifications) to find out if your PC can run Lumion. Below are some high-end PC requirements for achieving fast, non-laggy, and stable performance in Lumion:

  • A powerful and fast GPU with a 20,000+ PassMark Score and VRAM of 11 GB or more.
  • CPU with more than 4.0 GHz and 8 cores.
  • RAM 64 GB. If you are only doing simple scenes, you can get by with 16GB, but this amount of RAM is not ideal for large, complex scenes.
  • 64-bit Windows 10.
  • A 1000-watt Gold- or Titanium-rated 80+ power supply.
  • 40 GB free storage space on a fast drive such as an m.2 NVME drive (Lumion needs about 20 GB of free storage space).

4. Which processor is best for Lumion?

Lumion benefits a lot from high single-core performance. So, a CPU with many cores is not necessary. It is better to have a CPU with strong single-core performance.

You can run Lumion with a CPU that clocks at 3.0 GHz or has 2000 PassMark scores, or higher. But a CPU scoring more than 2600 PassMark is advised to keep up with a fast GPU. Because a weak CPU will practically block those extra benefits you would have received.

7. How much does Lumion cost?

Lumion 12 is available in Standard or Pro editions:

  • Lumion Standard costs €1499/license.
  • Lumion PRO costs €2999/license.

If two or more people want to use a single Lumion license key on multiple computers at the same time, then you need to add seats to your license. Extra seats cost €1499/seat for Lumion Standard, cost €2999/seat for Lumion Pro.

In addition, Lumion offers free educational licenses for full-time students and educators. The license is free and unrestricted for a year (student) and for 3 years (faculty).

8. Is Lumion a one-time purchase?

When you buy a Lumion license, you are getting what is called a ‘floating license’. These are effectively the same as network licenses. You can use the license indefinitely and you can install a single Lumion license key on multiple computers that belong to you (either a natural person or legal entity).

9. Can I use Lumion for free?

Lumion is free for students, lecturers, and academic programs, including all the features, tools, and content in Lumion Pro. You can apply for a free educational license here.

Or you can experience the Lumion Trial for 14 days.

10. What CAD software is compatible with Lumion?

Lumion 12 is one of the best real-time rendering applications for architecture. Not only Lumion is easy to use with its simple user interface, but also it produces stunning renders in minutes. Like many other render engines, Lumion needs powerful hardware to run smoothly, especially an excellent graphics card.

In this post, Chip Render will explore Lumion 12 System Requirements. In other words, the requirements of a PC that can give you a good Lumion experience, as well as some common questions you may want to know.

Lumion 12 System Requirements

Lumion differs from other CAD software as it relies primarily on having a top-notch graphics card. This is especially important for Lumion’s high-end features. Additionally, a computer with a quick graphics card and lots of memory is needed for Lumion, along with an internet connection.

These are Lumion 12 System Requirements, as taken from Lumion’s official website.

Lumion 12 System Requirements - FAQ

1. How do I check if Lumion can run on my computer?

There are two ways:

> Find your GPU, and compare your GPU’s PassMark score with Lumion’s system requirements.

> Download the free trial and run Lumion’s in-program “Benchmark” test. Lumion will benchmark your computer’s GPU, Graphics Memory, CPU, and system memory. If any of these components have a red score, you may need to upgrade it.

2. Does Lumion work on a Mac?

Maybe. You can use Lumion on Mac by using Bootcamp to run Windows. Because Lumion is only compatible with Windows. MacOS is not supported.

3. Why do I have a low benchmark score for the CPU?

First, you need to check if your CPU meets or exceeds the minimum system requirement (please check above). Some reasons why you have a low CPU benchmark score:

  • Background processes & applications may be having an impact.
  • Intel SpeedStep is running and it may make the CPU run slower when speed is not needed.
  • More accurate Benchmark tests may be needed.

4. Why do I have a low benchmark score for the GPU?

First, you need to check if your GPU meets or exceeds the minimum system requirement (please check above). Some reasons why you have a low GPU benchmark score:

  • You don’t have the latest graphics card driver and all available Windows updates installed.
  • Your PC isn’t using the right graphics card.
  • If you have two monitors and two graphics cards, the monitor you’re using with Lumion might be physically connected to the slow graphics card.
  • More accurate Benchmark tests may be needed.

5. Does Lumion use the GPU or CPU?

Both. Lumion uses CPU for the UI and previews and uses GPU for rendering.

It’s better to have a fast GPU paired with a fast CPU, to avoid bottlenecks.

6. Can I run Lumion without a GPU?

Lumion relies heavily on GPU power. So if you do not have a decent GPU, I wouldn’t recommend using Lumion.

7. Can Lumion use multiple GPUs?

Lumion will only use the graphics card that is connected to the monitor that the Lumion window starts on. So for the best performance, you only need 1 GPU and that GPU is high-end.

8. Why is Lumion so laggy?

There are various reasons why Lumion is laggy and slow. It could be because of your complex and unoptimized scenes, or your slow computer. So you can try to optimize your scene and reduce the quality first. If the cause is from your computer, you might need to upgrade the hardware or use Chip Render – a powerful and affordable render farm for Lumion.
